You're just going to have to break down and try them both yourself. ;) 
I started with Linux but I now use only FreeBSD.  It's a matter of
personal preference - they both get the job done.

See what works best with your hardware and what you feel most
comfortable with.  As many people will tell you, if you know someone
using one of the two, go with what they use as it'll give you someone to
turn to when you need help.
