The only limitations I'm aware of are disk accessing :)well, i'd love to hand my friend several real life number examples... :)and i'm sure there are lots of people who would also love to know how :)different people have set up their news servers and what kind of disk :)i/o they manage to get... :)hunch i have is that when i go to news setup, it'll be a machine with :)about 10-12 2gig drives and adaptec 3940UW, maybe if i really want to :)do what i'd think would be fast i'd go with 3940UW and 2940UW (this :)one for the system), or even 2 3940UWs... and in the news server :)section, about 5 2gig drives per channel. ccded to the edge. =) :)my hunch tells me i'd get over 7 articles per second with it, but :)since i cant afford the setup testing, does anyone run anything :)nearly equal to that? Tyan Tomcat I P166 w/512k cache 128mb fast page mode 8x36 RAM 2 BT-956C controllers 4 fast/wide 4gig Barracudas OS and history/logs on cuda #1 remaining cudas are striped as a 12 gig news spool cnews + nntp 100mbit FDDI to Crisco 7000 to T3 to UUnet I get about 4 articles per second. The limiting factor is the speed at which my newsfeeds can hand me articles since the machine and the disks are relatively idle. Average disk seeks (according to iostat) is about 7-7.5ms so I suspect this machine is more than capable of trouncing a 7 article/sec threshold. I just need to find someone who can shove the articles out the door fast enough for me to even remotely stress the setup. If anyone has a stunningly fast news server who'd like to feed me for a few days, I'd be happy to add their feed to my current one and post the results.
