First RT Handbook on both versions of PPP. There's quite a bit of stuff
there, and the two versions work differently.

Second, all of the configuration files and stuff need to be in /etc/ppp
, not just in /etc. For pppd, the necessary file is /etc/ppp/options ,
with a few peripheral files as well.

I use pppd for my site's connection to my ISP, and have no trouble with
it. My dialup chat script does all the modem work up to and including
the username and password entries for my ISP.

Since you are not keeping a connection past the logon attempt, I would
suggest you start by attempting a manual login to your ISP. Pay
particular attention to the exact prompts your ISP sends, and its
responses to your username and password. Verify that you are using the
correct case for all characters, and that no characters are rejected or
misinterpreted for any reason. Remember, if your login fails, no matter
what the reason, your ISP will drop the connection in seconds.

If this succeeds, check your chat script against the actual strings you
saw. If it fails, find out what was wrong and make the appropriate
corrections.
