I got a 'penpal' mailing - and replied that I would happily proofread
any further mail from that domain for $50/line. Any e-mail sent by that
domain would constitute acceptance of these terms. I allowed one free
proofreading which had to have a subject 'we will not send you any more
junk e-mail' (just in case they didn't get the message).

I've had nothing since.
