You are 100% right on the dot. The same stuff drove me totally fruity. I ended
up recompiling ls statically from the bsd4.4 lite distribution. Also because
of other reasons I just had an ftp daemon running for every (virtual) interface
to really accomplish several non-anonymous user accounts and directories.
