Minix Version 2.0 is available from http://www.cs.vu.nl/~ast/minix.html and will run quite nicely on old, otherwise obsolete, hardware. Note that the license permits only educational and research use; so don't go setting up a rival to Altavista with it, or anything... The book (Andrew S. Tanenbaum's `Operating Sytems: design and implementation') is pretty well essential to the OS, unless you want to spend your life reading the source. The second edition is immanent.
