I know that it should make a difference, and on dedicated routers it : does, but not in FreeBSD. Yep - you're right. The netmask *can't* mean anything when you're talking point-to-point. A point-to-point is by definition an interface with a mask of 0xffffffff and an automatic routing table entry (the other side). Maybe the point-to-point interfaces themselves should fail to configure if you try to give them a netmask or broadcast address !
