Btw., Arne's attitude is very dangerous. Of course, Linux drivers are even likely to beat BSD/OS drivers wrt. speed. (I'm not sure about the Adaptec driver, this might not be the most brilliant point of Linux. My comment is meant to be more general.) BSD/OS is IMHO often picking a `conservative' route when a decision between `risky' and `slower but more reliable' is to be made. This is certainly what the userbase does expect, but you should _really_ not underestimate the huge man-power that is behind the Linux development. A typical up-to-date Linux system is in general about the same speed as a typical up-to-date FreeBSD system (that's the only thing i can speak authoritative for), and FreeBSD is certainly not known to be a slow system either. (Linux is said to be often even faster under light load conditions.) So, while the Linux folks certainly have another target market than BSD/OS, it's simply stupid and very dangerous to just only _believe_ they won't ever get a performant system. They do, regardless of whether you (`you' - that's Arne in this case) believe it or not. No, i'm by far not known as a Linux bigot, i'm a member of the FreeBSD core team for those who don't know... -- J"org Wunsch Unix support engineer joerg_wunsch@interface-business.de http://www.interface-business.de/~j
