Hello,

I have an ethernet at home that links two PCs running BSD Unix
(FreeBSD). Additionally I have a notebook, that is linked with a laplink
cable (PLIP) to one of the PCs. The other PC has a modem that hosts a
SLIP route to the internet.

INTERNET-slip-NEPUMUK-ether-PLOCUS-plip-LIBERT

NEPUMUK has only a host address granted by the provider, so I can't use
it as a packet forwarding router to the world. Therefore I must use
addresses on my little network that do not conflict with the addresses
in the world. I guessed that there are no addresses in the world that
start with 127. So I have now two Class C subnets:

127.1.0 on the ethernet, and
127.1.1 on the PLIP line

	ETHERNET	PLIP SLIP LOOPBACK
NEPUMUK 127.1.0.1 160.45.216.109	127.0.0.1
PLOCUS 127.1.0.2 127.0.0.1
  (plocus-lap) 127.1.1.1 127.0.0.1
LIBERT 127.1.1.2 127.0.0.1

PLOCUS has packet forwarding capability switched on while nepumuk has
this switched off in order not to send out packets with local host
addresses to the world.

The local network works somehow but not really satisfying:

(1) LIBERT is not able to ping himself by his PLIP address.
(2) each site can only connect its direct neighbours i.e. PLOCUS
does not route any packet from ETHERNET to PLIP or vice versa.

I suspect that I made some mistakes using the 127 and the 0 bytes as
network addresses, since both are special. But which addresses are save
to be used in an unofficial network?

Is ther a manual or tutorial teaching me how to set up small local
networks?

How do I have to deal with netmasks?

any help is appreciated!
regards
