I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but my home machine runs "ppp -auto". I can dial into it and ping my ISP. The ping finds the modem (that I'm dialed into) in use, and delays. When I drop the line, ppp makes a connection to my ISP. Given 'net connectivity, I can then connect to my home machine via the 'net.
