Now be fair... when it was SunOS versus Ultrix I don't think anyone could have considered Ultrix the superior solution. The biggest problem DEC has is they took so long getting on the RISC bandwagon they lost market share... why run Ultrix on a VAX (slow) or on a MIPS box (why not run RISC/OS if you want MIPS)? Their biggest advantage right now is they took so long getting on the RISC bandwagon they could do it right. The Alpha is such a beautiful chip and Digital UNIX is such a nice platform that it's a damn shame I can't use 'em for everything. Especially since Digital UNIX is based on 4.3 Reno which was about the last full 4.3 release before 4.4, so it's got all sorts of goodies that never got into SunOS or Irix or AIX or what have you... Fast, simple, clean... if operating systems were cathedrals Digital UNIX would be Notre Dame and Solaris would be St Pauls... If it's not baroque, don't fix it. -- </peter>
