There is a VERY good book by McKusick, Bostic, Karels, and Quarterman
titled:

The Design and Implementation of the 4.4BSD Operating System

ISBN: 0-201-54979-4
Addison-Wesley Publishing
Cost: ~$50 in the U.S.

It's around 500 pages and covers, almost exclusively, the concepts, data
structures, and algorithms of the 4.4BSD kernel(from which FreeBSD was
derived).
