Samba works quite well for Win95-FreeBSD, and it makes life a lot easier than trying to explain FTP to Windows users. Unless you have a 10M Ether connection to your ISP, I would recommend that you first FTP the FreeBSD distribution to a DOS(FAT16) directory on a non-booting hard disk -- that is, an Extended Dos Partition. You don't need the compat files, and you need only the Samba package from the ports collection (not that it would hurt to get some other conveniences, but first things first). You also don't need the XFree86 collection, which is quite large and takes a long time to download. Do the FreeBSD install by following directions generated from the boot.flp installation, and when you get to the Ports menu, choose Samba. This will (and this is very important) make for you a smb.conf (Samba configuration file) that will, 9 out of 10 times, work on your system. This will save you from trying to figure out the Samba documentation itself, which, um, needs work. > Anyways I would appreciate any pointers for setting up the machines. > The two machines have both NE2000 compatibles.
