The solution doesn't quite make sense, but does make the sound card work great. Reboot your machine and go into config mode (enter "-c" at the Boot: prompt). Change your SB's IRQ from 7 to 5. Save changes and the machine will proceed to reboot. If your problem was as strange as mine (a little sound came out of the card, but not much) then this will cure it.
