Sun demonstrated this at Comdex Fall, running out-of-the-shrink-wrap Windows applications (like Excel) under Solaris on a SPARCstation. Performance was good, they were emulating the intel application code, and running the Windows 3 system calls natively. They were talking about bundling this technology in a future release of Solaris, since it contains no Microsoft code there is no licencing issue. I still think NT will sell by the million. Sad.
