Forget about running X. Before I got 16M ram, I ran with 8 and that was torture. Sure, you've stripped your system down by removing drivers from getting loaded at bootup, but your system still needs to function. To my recollection (on an OLD Linux system without swap), you *can* run consoles (but rough) without swap, but you'll barely be able to get out of the starting gate with X. With 4m, you'd be lucky if the intro screen loaded. :) If I'm correct, you don't have to make a swap partition but can use /tmp (for example) as your swap space. I think this is in the handbook, where certain things are outlined to do this (including the lines that go into /etc/fstab). Once again, you'll have to read the docs. Well, I know your note contained a whole lot more, BUT it would probably be best if you looked at http://www.freebsd.org and read substantial portions of the handbook and mailing list documentation to get exactly what you want (or put you into the right direction for a good solution). -- Nate [nvp@shore.net||nvp@nfic.com] "Take them to the Iron Maiden" IRON MAIDEN ...
