Message-ID: <ellis.723403279@nova> Sender: news@zip.eecs.umich.edu (Mr. News) Organization: GMI Engineering&Management Institute, Flint, MI Date: Thu, 3 Dec 1992 17:21:19 GMT Lines: 38 I am running Intel SVR4.0.3 and the latest Xfree86. I bought a Boca ET4000 board, which failed after a couple of weeks, but before I had Xfree. When the replacement board came in, still no Xfree, it would not hold sync with the NEC MSII. This was replicated on another system, so the board was returned again. While I was waiting for the replacement I installed Xfree, and ran it successfully for a couple of weeks in mono mode on an old Tatung VGA board. When I installed the newest replacement Boca board yesterday and ran it through the vdiag tests under DOS, everything seemed alright, all modes worked. When I booted under UNIX and tried to start Xfree, it found the board and tried to initialize it, but would not sync. I looked at the clocks output and rebooted in mono X to work on Xconfig. Every time it scrolled the screen, I got raster line breakup, but not serious. I changed an entry in Xconfig from 44MHz to 45 to approximate a clock on my board and tried to restart color X and all hell broke loose. I could not even get a properly synced text console back. I shut down blind and rebooted to floppy and now my text screen is about as screwed up as the mono X had been, with jitterey raster lines. Now the vdiag tests put the card out to lunch too. Can anything in Xfree damage anything on the Boca board? Or am I doing something really stupid? Or am I having a really bad run of luck? I am not sure the dealer will believe that the board is at fault again. They are a VAR and think I am sparking the board anyway. If I am going to have to buy a new board I would like to buy a faster board anyway, but I have not seen any talk of 8514 or S3 servers for SVR4 except for the commercial products from Metrolink and Snittily. Does anyone know of a port of any of the BSD386 or Linux drivers to SVR4? Also how does the speed of the Trident 8900C or WD90Cxx compare to the ET4000? -- -- ___________________ R.Stewart(Stew) Ellis, Assoc.Prof., (Off)313-762-9765 / _____ ______ Humanities & Social Science, GMI Eng.& Mgmt.
