Just a guess, but maybe the freebsd system doesn't like large
reads of directorys - a number of BSD systems don't.

There is a way to turn this off on Solaris in /etc/system, but
I don't remember what it is (someone will post I hope).

In the mean time, try adding rsize=1024 to the mount options
- this will do it, but will probably hit performance too.
