I run FreeBSD with the PAO mods on my Toshiba Satellite 1950CT (it's
ancient but it works). most important choice that I made was to use
the IBM PCMCIA ethernet card. I made this choice because the IBM card
works with two drivers, if_ze in the stock kernel or if_ed in the
kernel after the PAO mods. This way I can install using the stock
kernel and do the PAO mods after or use the PAO bootdisks available at
the PAO site and install PAO directly. As far as modems go stay away
from Hayes, the Optima series of modems has a funky UART that's only
recognized by FreeBSD (2.1.0) serial driver under special
conditions. In addition this modem is also quirky about what it will
connect to. I have a ComShare 450 that can split a phone call to
different lines I use it to differentiate between a fax call and a
modem call on my second line. This way I can run hylafax without
having to install mgetty. They Hayes cannot dial through this box and
no-one at Hayes has returned my tech support calls to tell me how I
can work around this problem. So my next modem will be a Megahertz
which I've also tested and works fine.

As soon as I can I will be upgrading to FreeBSD 2.1.[56] on this
machine. This may fix the UART detection problem with the modem. We'll
see.
