You need to label it first.  For FreeBSD 2.1.5 or higher, you can
run

	disklabel -Brw od0 auto

to generate the initial label (and continue with disklabel -e then).
For earlier systems, refer to the FAQ, section 2.15.  Please, use the
most recent FAQ on www.freebsd.org -- this section has been updated.
