Hi Norbert: You decide based on the next info. We are using FreeBSD commercially. We just finished a project for a local paging company. The machine is a Pentium 120mhz with 16 meg HD and using 32 serial ports ( the excelent Cyclades Cyclom 16Y ). The system processes over 500,000 alphanumeric messages per day from over 200 live operators dispatching alphanumeric paging messages. ( Look at our web page www.softronex.com so you get an idea, it's in spanish, but you'll get the picture! ) The system has been in operation for about 2 weeks without a single reset. We are starting to port ALL our old systems to FreeBSD and our new product comming out now in January, Pagetrak/WG, which is a PC running FreeBSD and stands beside a paging terminal ( Unipage, Glenayre, etc. ) so you can page from anywhere in the world to your local paging company. I was able to trash Linux about a year ago ( i think it was rel 1.2.8 ) but i have not been able to trash ( or crash ) FreeBSD in any way "yet". If you look at the kernel revs, you'll see that the FreeBSD team works more tightly than Linux because Linux has a new kernel about every 2 weeks, and FreeBSD only about every 2 to 4 months. So the beta testing is better and less hacked than linux. Try the both if you want, but i strongly suggest, specially if you want to run a commercial or industrial app as we do, to go with FreeBSD. You won't go wrong. Hope this help. Karl Wagner President Softronex Corporation Bayamon, Puerto Rico
