When I helped a friend install BSd a few months ago we had the same 
problem. I think that you have to mark the partition as bootable. To
do this, simply boot the kernel (the one on the hard drive) with the
``-c'' option, enter visual mode, and set the kernel partition as
bootable. I can't remember the exact key to do it, but it's
written on the bottom of the screen somehere.
