A Second Meeting of the Politburo...


The General Secretary was angry. "We are
engaged in a global competition with Linus.
To survive, we must expand, or we will
collapse inwards and be no more." His fist
banged against the table.

The KGB officer looked excited. "We can
introduce false propaganda on the internet
newsgroups.  We can place  moles among the
linux developers. Our agents will covertly
introduce bug-ridden code into their=20
development tree!"

As usual, the party theoretician was annoyed
at the head of the KGB. "You idiot, the=20
linux operating system has survived and even
prospered despite bug-ridden and inelegant
code. You understand nothing of the principle
of their success."

The General Secretary had calmed down by
now. "In truth, Linus has greatly expanded
the market for free software. If we maintain
a restrained and honourable competition, this
will only increase interest among the
proletariat."

The meeting turned to other subjects. The
Minister for State Production began to recommend
that software developers be re-assigned to
affix mailing labels to cd-rom packages...
