It turned out to cause some problems for a few people. Forcing the Xserver to start on a particular VTY should better be done using the `vt04' option to the server, see /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers. If you do it there, you can safely start xdm in daemon mode (the default) from your rc.local.
