There are at least two ethernet interfaces that exhibit problems like yours. With FreeBSD 2.1.0, the Intel EtherExpress 16 and the DEC DE205-AC both exhibit problems similar to those you describe. It appears that the drivers go "out to lunch" after a small block of network activity.
