Update:

The only way I was able to get dos, linux and FreeBSD to boot was to
put the root partitions on c: with other partitions on the second
disk.

I also had a mail message asking for help from somebody who was also
trying to put free bsd on the second disk. I tried to respond to him
but the mail bounced.

It would appear that FreeBSD has the root partition built into the
config file. This would imply that free bsd could never install any
place but on one drive. I seem to recall that Ultrix had a config
file parameter "config vmunix root on boot". Does FreeBSD have
something simular in kernel.GENERIC?
