Just to put in my 2 cents worth -- I just had to install and work with
the Logitech Color hand scanner (about $150), to run under DOS/Windoze.
Quite frankly, I was amazed by its performance. It can autostitch up to
four 4" swaths across the original ( with 1/2" to 1-1/2" overlap and no
more than 6 degree angle variance). It was clean and accurate for me on
line art, gray scale, text, and very fancy color images.

The OCR software was also extremely good, and does an excellent job with
full pages, columnar text, and tables & charts. The DOS/Windoze drivers
are Twain-compliant, and integrate nicely with other apps, such as Paint
Shop Pro. It actually produces better results, especially with OCR, than
our older flatbed scanner at work.

It wouldn't necessarily be my first choice, but it wouldn't be my last,
either.
