(BSDI) To Deliver New BSDI GroupGate Web Accelerating Gateway for Novell and Windows Networks Firewalled Gateway's cacheing speeds up world wide web downloads for homogeneous workgroups by 10 to 150 times. Power-Cached World Wide Web Accelerator, Protocol-Separating Firewall, and High-Performance IPX/SPX-to-Internet Gateway Highlight New Product Fall Internet World '96 - New York, NY (December 11, 1996) - Berkeley Software Design, Inc. (BSDI) today announced its new BSDI GroupGate Internet gateway and Web accelerator for Novell and Windows networks. The new BSDI product offers protocol-separation firewall security for corporate networks, accelerated Intranet performance for Novell and Windows workgroups, and full Internet access without requiring TCP/IP networking on corporate desktops. "We're introducing BSDI GroupGate in response to the corporate market's requirement for reliable, fast and manageable Internet/Intranet and Web access," said Mark Trimue, BSDI's Vice President of Marketing. "Our customers want to build secure Novell and Windows networks without the perils and complexities of TCP/IP networking on the desktop and they want web activity to be more responsive than typical access bandwidth often allows for. We're providing secure Internet/Intranet and Web access for up to 250 Novell and Windows users per each GroupGate-powered PC server for as low at $25 per seat." BSDI's power-cached Internet accelerator caches the Group's Web, FTP, and DNS traffic at the gateway similar to how individual workstations cache a single user's web travel. The workgoup's frequently accessed Web sites are available at local area network speeds so that users can access important Web and Intranet information without having to wait on the Internet for external connections. "It's great", say's Trimue. BSDI GroupGate is the first Internet gateway software to combine protocol-separation firewalling, easy installation and administration, Web address filtering, and BSDI's unique power-caching for accleratate Intranetand Web performance. The dedicated BSDI gateway requires no NLMs so corporate Intranet managers are assured of easy maintenance, complete Novell/Windows-to-Internet connectivity, and top server performance even with inexpensive PC hardware. BSDI GroupGate customers who wish to upgrade to a full Web, Internet or intranet server may easily and inexpensively upgrade BSDI GroupGate to BSDI Internet Server 3.0, which features Netscape FastTrack and Apache Web servers, as well as E-mail, Netnews, FTP, and Fax servers. BSDI GroupGate's WinSock DLL utilizes the SPXII protocol to enable support for true-multithreaded 32-bit WinSock applications, such as Java applets and Netscape Navigator, while supporting all WinSock-compliant Internet and TCP/IP applications. BSDI GroupGate is designed as a true plug-and-play solution that simply plugs into any existing NetWare of Microsoft IPX network. No knowledge of UNIX is required, and all Internet/Intranet and Web workstation tools run in the familiar Windows environment. Unlike other firewall technologies that rely on filtering and packet inspection to blocked unwanted network traffic, GroupGate utliizes an impenetrable protocol-separating method of physically separating the corporate network and the Internet. GroupGate requires no IP addresses or TCP/IP neworking on existing workstations and only one IP address is required per gateway. GroupGate provides X Windows support for Windows desktops and complete NetWare-compatible file and print services. Each workstation is simply equipped with GroupGate's performance-optimized WinSock DLL to communicate with the BSDI gateway using fast IPX/SPX protocols, which improves network performance by over 50 percent compared to TCP/IP-based networks. No NLMs or modifications of the existing IPX/SPX network are required. BSDI's MaxIM Internet management and monitoring tools enables the network administrator to control the workgroup's Internet access, easily configure Internet gateway and power-caching services, view auditing/reporting logs and bandwidth utlization, and automatic proxy configuration for Web browser applications. BSDI GroupGate works with NetWare 3.1, 3.12, or 4.1, and and Microsoft IPX network for Windows95, Windows NT, or Windows for Workgroups. Pricing and Availablility BSDI GroupGate will be available in Q197 and is priced starting at USD $545 for a five-user gateway. Additional workstation licenses are available for 10, 25, 50, 100, and 250 users. About Berkeley Software Design, Inc.
