I believe you have to use NetBSD-Current, but I think it's only for
Quadra/Centris machines.

PPC upgrade will only hurt you here I'm afraid.  MKLinux (PPC Linux) is the
only thing out there to my knowledge and it only works on 7500 (?) and
greter macs (the ones with openfirmware)

You could try MachTEN (Big $$)?
