Of course, they are. As long as you know about the possible danger. You very apparently know. :-) fdisk /mbr or dd if=/dev/zero of=... usually do the trick if you wanna reuse those drives. But you gotta know this. And, you must not try to install any sort of a boot manager, since this will clobber the BSD bootstrap.
