(Do you have a source for the 2x claim from above?) In any case the numbers I quoted for the compile times was an actual real world test -- something I do several times a day. Same code, same cross compiler (gcc) etc. I just want the machine that will do it the fastest. >the ultra is a much better chip than anything that runs in the ss20 >class machines. >clocked now at 250mhz (or even 300mhz i dont know) here are the results. >keep in mind the 141mhz ultra sparc was the first ultra ever put out, i >dont think When sun sells me an upgrade card for my ss5 case that has one of these chips on it AT A COMPARABLE PRICE and SPEED to the ppro board I just bought, I'll buy it too. Mind you, the new ppro computer cost me <$2000 w/o disk or monitor. Saying that sun has some $20,000 computer that can almost run as fast as $2,000 comodity hardware isn't saying much. Yea, I wouldn't be shocked to find that the PPRO box might have lower reliabiltity. At that price I can buy 10 of 'em and keep them as hot spares. >they run one of the most advanced unixes of this century. solaris 2.5 on I guess that all depends on what you mean by most advanced. Part of the impetus for going to the ppro from sunos was to get a more advanced OS. I'm running netbsd 1.2. >yes, i am a sun supporter, i am becuase i know how reliable they are. Hey, I've got nothing against sun quality. I liked my SS5 and the SLC and ELC before that. Its just that now I have a choice, and my pocketbook and watch *both* said buy the PPRO. -wolfgang -- Wolfgang Rupprecht <wolfgang@wsrcc.com> <http://www.wsrcc.com/>
