I'm trying to print a postscript file from our BSDI2.1
based PC to a HP LaserJet3 and can currently print plain text,
 but not PS.

Does the standard /etc/printcap with it associated filters handle
this
 printer?.
Is it necessary to edit the vf filter i.e.
/usr/libexec/lpr/ps2jep-filter to
inform it that it is a LaserJet3 as opposed to a LaserJetPlus.
