I've looked for FreeBSD FAQ's and vendor docs and haven't been able to determine "standard pc compatibility". When I go to the PC store and ask, "is it an ISA or PCI bus", "are the drives ide", or "what is the video chip-set" I get completely blank looks and/or panic by the sales person who quickly gives me the vendor brochure and runs. I am looking for information on 486 class portables/laptops. I am hoping to purchase a used/refurbished "cheap" model for less than $1000. I had an IBM 365 (486) portable, it ran FreeBSD quite welli but I changed jobs and had to give it back. (I wonder what my manager did with a laptop running unix which was purchased preloaded with Windows/95 :-O) vendor: model: cpu: memory: disk: display: video chipset: sound: cdrom: mouse: modem: network device: good experiences: bad experiences: I will post a synopsis if there are enough (more than 10) responses. thanks Lloyd M Caldwell udplmc@usi.utah.edu Center For High Performance Computing 801-585-9299 University of Utah 85ssb Salt Lake City, UT 84112 /* systems-support-large-scale-scientific-computing */
