Are far as the networking code goes, I disagree, it took Stevens 1200 pgs
to explain the TCP code alone, which is full of various hacks, gotos, etc
Can't speak for the rest of the kernel.

There is also a lot more development going on, ZIP drives, Token Ring,
Sound cards, etc 
Linux got a bad rep when people started trying the 1.3.XX kernels, 1.2.13
was solid, 2.0.XX also seem to be solid now.
