I don't want to RTFM you, but have a look at the man page and the config files located under /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm and don't forget to start the daemon somewhere (for example, /etc/rc.local) Then it should work without problems. (Does an xdm login appear when you start an X server local on the FreeBSD machine?)
