Probably an incompatibility with the talk daemon on the remote host.
SunOS e.g. has its own protocoll which works only with Sun-OS itself.

NetBSD's talk protocoll is compatible with itself of course, Linux (at
least with i386), AmiTALK (at least with 1.5x), IRIX, WinTALK and
probably some other operating system.

It's is not compatible with Sun-OS 4.x and 5.x.
