This isn't a direct answer to your question because I'm new to FreeBSD, too.

But what I've done each time I've installed a new *nix OS, is issue a
"ls -lR > INDEX" command from the root directory. This gives you a
complete listing of all the files on the new system. When I need to find
something, I "more /INDEX" and search for the string/file in question.

This works a heckuvalot better than trying to find something with "which"
or "whereis".

Cheers!
