In my opinion, it is definitely superior to even the patched stock wd driver. It fixes problems with bad block handling completely, supports 4 drives with 2 controllers. I think the stock wd driver won't support secondary controllers because the BIOS has no support for them (the stock wd driver still relies on the BIOS tables for the initialization routines).
