What's your problem with the FreeBSD approach? Sure, i wish it would support more drives, had fixed the ability to read CD-ROMs etc., but at least, it works for me. And i don't have the feeling that its architecture is totally crappy. I don't have any particular approach with that method of solving the problem (ie. I realize what the big problems are, and what FreeBSD has done is nearly as good as any other solution).
