I'm very happy to report that I'm back in business with FreeBSD 2.1.6!

And it's working great, too! I finally realized what I needed to do to
get it to install from DOS. Ran Partition Magic and created a second DOS
partition just big enough to hold all the dists. Restarted Windows 95 in
"step-by-step" mode, disabling all memory management programs, and the
install went off without a hitch. Even got my X working OK now (although
I still have my work cut out for me to get it back to where it was;
running twm right now; yuck!).

With my recompiled kernel, sysinstall now goes straight for the CD-ROM for
packages, etc. Finally it's working the way it should! Excellent!

I am pleased.  :-)

Conrad, who will sleep well tonight now that his FreeBSD is back up
