Easiest solution. The FAQ lists where you can find the DES crypt
library. It is on ftp.internat.freebsd.org.

The crypt(3) in 2.2-RELEASE (soon going into -GAMMA state for pre-release
testing) is able to understand both DES and MD5 strings.
