Are you running on a 16-bit display?  Sun's JDK (which FreeBSD's port is
directly related to) only works on 8-bit displays correctly.

I'm running the JDK on *very* significant applications and it works just
as well (just as bad) as the JDK Sun distributes with their most recent
development tools.
