Dump is supposed to correctly respond to an early end-of-medium condition anyway. (I've recently added a long overdue option to force it writing to EOM into the FreeBSD sources.) dump 0uBbf 4000000 32 /dev/nrst0 /usr for example. > one thing more, how exactly a raw data stored in tape > device? Since dump stores data on a fairly low level, dump tapes are usually mutually incompatible between different systems (unless they use the exact same filesystem type, and it's useful if they also have the same byte order). That's also not what dump is intended for; if you need portability between different systems, use tar/cpio/pax. -- J"org Wunsch Unix support engineer joerg_wunsch@interface-business.de http://www.interface-business.de/~j
