What are you doing covering yourself with gasoline and going for a stroll in comp.os.linux.advocacy? Silly. On Tue, 04 Feb 1997 08:28:19 -0500, John S. I ``downgraded'' to Linux; I switched, a bit over a year ago, from FreeBSD 2.1.0-RELEASE to Red Hat Linux 3.0.3, because it ran a lot faster. I liked the easier installation, easy upgrading (I'm now at 4.0, and expect to upgrade all my boxes, including my alpha, to 4.1 soon), and speed. I haven't tried FreeBSD since then; it may have caught up to Linux. I seriously doubt it has passed it. >One reason that we have the Linux emulator (and EXT2FS) is to ease the >upgrade to FreeBSD from Linux. I've never heard of anybody going that way. Why would they want to? Have you improved FreeBSD to the point where it's now as fast as Linux, or runs as stably? Then once you port it to the Alpha (I've upgraded from PCs) I'll give it another try. >Actually, the emulators are fairly easy to write given a template -- just >wondering why Linux can't do it. I'd guess it's because there isn't any application that's available for FreeBSD, that's not available directly for Linux. Just a guess mind you, but that would explain the lack. -Bennett
