You can get Motif for about $70, though.  See www.cheapbytes.com.

Redhat now has Applixware on sale for $200.  If you have a student in your
family it's only $80.

There's a French (I think) product called Xclamation.  I've haven't heard
much about it, but even the multiuser license is very reasonable. 

At least 2 Java office suites are in the pipeline.

If you *really* need a word processor under Linux, they're there.

Most GPL software tends to be stuff that some programmer needed/wanted/had
fun doing and wanted to share, so I guess that tells you something.
