   I think this could be your problem. As far as I've read in the
freebsd documentation, it supports Adaptecs in Thin, Normal and Wide
models (but Ultra Wide is not mentioned). 
  I think that FreeBSD should be able to use your Adaptec as an
non-Ultra Wide, but than you should change your drive ID to an 3 bit
(less than 7).

   Without wide SCSI, you cannot use SCSI IDs above 7 ... IMHO
