I ran into a strange problem.

First here are the two machines involved

(the test horse)
486dx-50, 16mb ram, 500mb SCSI, 3c509-combo, Intel Process

(The Fun Machine)
p166, 128mb ram, 4gig baricuda, 9gig baricuda, Intel Process
Not sure of the netcard (have to look).

Both are running FreeBSD 2.1.6-RELEASE
Both are connected to a common hub
Both are not more than 15 feet away from each other(not that that makes a
difference).

Here is what happens (happened)
I decided I needed my home directory from the 486. I tarred and gzipped
it (remotely from the p166) then FTP'd from the p166 to the 486.
Did "hash" so I could see it move. Did "bin" just to be sure.
typed get me.tar.gz

The hash marks flew for about 9megs (total file size 25mb) then stopped.
As it turns out the 486 Locked so tight I had to do a hard reboot. I was
able to repeat the 4 times. Each time it locked at a different point but
always before the file was completed. Each time the 486 just plain
stopped.

The 486 is used mostly for testing and gets broken on a regular basis but
I don't know what could be causing this.

I used to have a grip on life
                 ....but then the handle broke
Now I have a really really good grip on nothing at all
