That's probably the major reason for using Linux over FreeBSD - from all accounts, Linux is very much more IDE friendly than BSD. For those using SCSI drives, it's very definitely a matter of personal preference (and also whether or not your local guru uses BSD or Linux :-) -- With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine. However, this is not necessarily a good idea. It is hard to be sure where they are going to land, and it could be dangerous sitting under them as they fly overhead. -- RFC1925.
