Depends on how much money you want to spend. I think best buy is currently a TANDBERG TDC 4222 which is also known as Panther 5000. The internal device without extra case costs about $600 ... You have backward compatibility down to QIC-24 (read) and QIC-150 (read/write). The drive is fast when you use the large 2.5GB tapes. Then it uses data compression. You can dump about 5GB with data compression. Speed is up to 600KB/sec (36 MB/min is peak performance). Tapes are on the first look more expensive then DAT, but you can re-use such a tape much more often, then a DAT tape. QIC tapes are more reliable then DAT's. They hold data up to 10 years and you can re-use a tape up to 100 times and maybe more ... And ... the drive is very silent ! Not as silent as a DAT but not much louder. Have a look at: http://www.tandbergdata.com/ if I remember right. -- andreas@klemm.gtn.com /\/\___ Wiechers & Partner Datentechnik GmbH Andreas Klemm ___/\/\/ Support Unix -- andreas.klemm@wup.de pgp p-key http://www-swiss.ai.mit.edu/~bal/pks-toplev.html >>> powered by <<< ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/Printing/aps-491.tgz >>> FreeBSD <<<
