I'm planning a new system (FreeBSD & X only), so I don't speak wit
experiance, but anyway:

The ET6000 card are supported by Xfree86, but now at full speed. The
latest beta release has "high speed" ET6000 support, so I assume soon
there will be a release version. In the mean time, you can use it.

The ET6000 chip(set) is very complete, including ramdac etc, etc so
any manufacture will do. Big brand-name is Hercules (dyname-128).

Use the 4Mb version, its is only about 70 dutch gulders more
expensive. (about 200 to 230 dutch gulders for a H. Dyn-128 4Mb)

S3 is supported, but there are hundred of chipset, and cominations,
most are supported, but ....
Selecting "the best S3 card" is hard!

Note: the ET6000 is fast, but it has no 3D support!
